February 15th 2003: the biggest protest action in human history. Over 15 million people, in over 60 cities around the world, protested against the military invasion of Iraq. 2002-2007 was also the most prolific period of protest song recording in history, and the Peace Not War music project was the focus for these recordings. Peace Not War responded to the destructive "War On Terror" with creativity and positivity. A network of Peace Not War bands in the UK staged dozens of concerts in clubs, squats, and at protest gatherings.
A handful of activists with no experience in the music industry set up Peace Not War in an East London living room and requested submissions for a fundraising compilation CD. The project escalated as rapidly as the public feelings about the slaughter of innocent civilians. Over 500 bands offered their songs freely.
Releasing radical music to educate the mainstream, and inspiring peace activists with sonic energy, Peace Not War was the soundtrack to the peace movement. 7 compilation albums have been released. A total of 263,000 CDs were distributed in 21 countries. All proceeds from CD sales were donated to a wide spectrum of peace activist organisations.
Peace Not War Vol. 2 is considered to be the finest protest song compilation ever released, and the collection of protest songs submitted to Peace Not War is the world's largest, but this awesome archive of music has been unavailable for years.
To mark the tenth anniversary of the world's largest protest action, Peace Not War is re-releasing the two classic double-albums as digital downloads:
